The sidewalks of Brevard recently became colorful canvases as advanced art students from Charles D. Owen High School put their creativity and artistic talents on display during a local chalk art contest.

Students had the opportunity to take their artistic skills beyond the classroom, transforming ordinary concrete into impressive works of art. Using colorful chalk, imagination, and techniques learned in class, the students brought their creative visions to life while participating alongside other talented artists.
Among the Owen High School participants, Ryleigh and Ella received honorable mention in the high school category, an exciting recognition of their creativity, dedication, and artistic abilities.
For these young artists, the experience was about more than creating beautiful artwork. It was an opportunity to collaborate, explore new techniques, and gain confidence while sharing their talents with the community.

“I desire for students to be engaged in art in the community,” said Advanced Art teacher Diane Birken. “These students are presenting to the public artistic expressions including things that are important to them and art they have learned in class.”
Experiences like the Brevard Chalk Art Contest demonstrate how arts education encourages students to think creatively, express themselves, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom.
