A Buncombe County Schools student athlete is headed to the west coast to play for a national audience.
Mia Roland, a rising junior at Owen High School, is on the roster for the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) Futures All-America Game later this month in Irvine, California. She was chosen by a PGF national selection committee that includes representatives of USA Today, Flo Softball, Line Drive Softball, and Gatorade’s Player of the Year. In addition to their athletic abilities, players must be in good academic standing with their schools.
“I’m so excited,” Mia shared. “I knew this was somewhere I wanted to be.”
She is especially proud of representing Owen High and Buncombe County Schools.
“It’s great to show that athletes can come from anywhere, and I’m really grateful for this opportunity.”
The Futures All-America Game pits the nation’s top high school sophomores against the top high school juniors. It takes place July 26 at 3pm, and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
“Being selected for the PGF All-American Game is one of the highest honors in high school softball,” said Owen High assistant principal Nathan Padgett, who also serves as the school’s athletic administrator. “Mia’s recognition as one of the top 44 players in the nation is a true testament to her dedication, hard work, and talent both on and off the field. This accomplishment not only celebrates Mia’s individual success but also brings pride to Owen High School and our entire Valley, showing what it means to represent our community on a national stage.”
Mia also plays on the school’s volleyball and basketball teams, and was named Owen High School Overall Athlete of the Year for in both 2024 and 2025.
