Assistant Principal

Gina Toomey

CD Owen High School

I am excited that we had time to recharge our minds and bodies over winter break!
I hope spring semester has been running smoothly for you. We will continue to transition through schedules due to COVID but we will we will persevere and be stronger as we wrap up this school year!

Although we have changed many daily patterns/routines in our lives, this time has given students and families/friends/guardians/communities an opportunity to spend time together.
I hope you will find the remainder of this semester to be both beautiful and time to challenge and inspire you to grow closer to reaching all of your personal goals.
I appreciate all of the dedicated staff, students, families and community members who work tirelessly to find and share their best attributes daily.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions about our daily school day. I find parent/community involvement to be the cornerstone to student success. Let's all work together to help raise our children/students!

About me~
Hello! I would like to introduce myself. My name is Gina Toomey. I grew up and graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, PA. I attended West Virginia University directly after high school and earned a bachelors of arts degree in history with a 5-12 teaching certification. I then continued with my education by earning a master of arts degree in special education - learning disabilities. I chose to continue my post graduate studies after completing my student teaching for Social Studies. I worked with many students that struggled with reading and writing. I was intrigued by the daily dedication from my students to succeed. I wanted to work to help students develop strategies to successfully complete their assignments and learn concepts fundamental to finding success in society. My desire was and continues to be to move our students towards graduation as well as post high school education and/or careers.

In 2003 I earned my EdS in Administration from Western Carolina University. I have been teaching at a wonderful school since then and have for now and will continue my work as a teacher of students with special needs.
I began teaching at Madison Middle School in Marshall, NC in 1998. I worked there for 4.5 years. I learned so much during my first five years of being an educator including working with colleagues, students and families. I moved to Buncombe County Schools for the 2002-2003 school year with an interest to work with students at the high school level. I worked with a wonderful staff and families at Enka High School for one year. I then transferred to CD Owen High School in order to fulfill a Department Chair position in the Special Education Department. I have continued to enjoy each year since.

I accepted a position as one of our three Assistant Principal positions at CD Owen High School in August, 2012. I have been swept away quickly to this new position and am working to find new ways to impact students and staff at our school. I will continue to work with the special education department as their administrative liaison. I also supervise and coordinate: Curriculum, Testing, SMART Lunch, field trips, student achievement, RTI, Student Orientation, Student Government, and fundraising activities. I also share several responsibilities with our three other administrators: Athletics, Discipline, and Teacher Evaluations.
