About Ms. Nicole Cockey

MA, English -
Western Carolina University

BA, English - University of North Carolina, Wilmington

Teaching License - University of North Carolina, Asheville; TNTP Academy

Originally from North Carolina, I have twelve years professional experience supporting student growth and academic success in schools across four states. I have taught for eight of these years in courses ranging from middle school language arts to college composition and developmental reading. Before joining Owen High School, I taught middle school language arts at an urban charter school in New Orleans.

My classroom is driven by high expectations, nurtured with appropriate supports, and guided by student choice, which means I will provide my students with the tools and resources they need to access complex texts and communicate complex ideas.  Students may take formative assessments (and essays) home to complete for homework any time extra time is needed. Additionally, students are encouraged to preview and/or re-read the text we'll be reading in class at home.

When I'm not at school, you can find me playing and learning with my own children, Finn and Sasha. We like to read, write, draw, play outside, and go to the pool or playground. When I'm not reading children's books to my own babies, I enjoy reading contemporary poetry and nonfiction essays. My husband, a former glass artist, currently works as a social worker in Swannanoa. Finn and Sasha attend Creative Village.

PARENTS, please feel free to email me any time to check on your student's progress. You will find that I keep our Google Classroom, as well as Power School grades, current and up to date. I am always available to answer questions via email, and to meet in person during my second period planning.
