Honors Biology/Biology

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students survey the history and development of biology including an introduction to biochemistry, cellular biology, physiology, genetics, organisms, and life processes. In addition to reading, students will engage in laboratory activities to develop process and problem solving skills. Students are required to take the NC Biology End of Course Exam.

GRADING
School Grading Philosophy:  The focus of grading at Owen High School is to give students accurate and meaningful feedback that supports and encourages student learning. Student grades are based on mastery of course content. Grades are based primarily on summative assessments (tests, performances, projects, etc.), with little weight on formative assessments (daily practice, homework, etc.). The purpose of daily practice and homework is to learn, receive feedback, and to clarify or correct errors in thinking or understanding.

The state of North Carolina requires that final grades be reported as a number grade on a 10-point scale for all students.

A = 90 – 100   B = 80 – 89     C = 70 – 79     D = 60 – 69     F = below 60

Final grades will be calculated using the following weights for the 9-week grading periods & final exam:
1st 9 Weeks = 37.5%
2nd 9 Weeks = 37.5%
EOC = 25%

All Biology classes will use Standards-Based Learning which is a system of academic instruction, assessment, grading and reporting that is based on students demonstrating mastery of the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn. If mastery does not happen initially, students will be given additional opportunities to show mastery.

Nine week grades will be calculated using the following percentages:
Tests (40%)
Standards (60%)

SMART LUNCH
Students with a grade below 70 at any time in the 9-week grading period and/or students who are directed by a teacher are expected to attend SMART Lunch tutoring. Students who do not attend will receive an administrative referral. Students not required to attend tutoring may participate in activities of choice during SMART Lunch.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS
Owen High School has adopted a Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support system. Our school promotes these characteristics for all students in all situations:

            I – Integrity                  A – Attitude                 M – Maturity

Teachers recognize students for their positive behaviors and try to redirect students from negative behaviors both through modeling and establishing consequences and rewards.

Discipline issues will be handled as outlined in the school discipline plan.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Buncombe County School Board policy states that a student may only have a total of five absences per semester per class.  A student must be in class for 2/3’s of the class period to be counted present.  Once a student misses more than 5 days, the student is required to make up the days through After-School Attendance Makeup, Saturday School, or Summer Attendance school.

NOTEBOOKS
All students are required to have a three-ring notebook to be used specifically for Biology class. Notebooks will be organized during class and will count toward each unit grade. This serves as a required artifact of student achievement in Biology.

REMIND
I will be using Remind this semester to communicate with students and parents. Remind is a website/app that provides a safe way for teachers to text message or email students and parents. Remind allows teachers to send messages to both students and parents without the exchange of phone numbers. Teachers never see student phone numbers. Students never see the teacher's phone number.
