MEMORANDUM FOR All 4th Brigade JROTC Instructors
SUBJECT: Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Essay Contest
1. General.
a. The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to give Cadets an opportunity to assimilate lessons learned from JROTC curriculum and communicate their knowledge in writing. Participating in the essay contest exposes Cadets to a key component of Education: writing. Writing in accordance with national standards outlined in the Common Core States Standards help Cadets prepare for college and careers.
b. For SY 20-21, National winners will receive Two-Star Note from the Commanding General, USACC and a JROTC note from the JROTC Director.
2. All Cadets enrolled in JROTC are encouraged to participate in the essay contest. A Cadet’s essay will be their own work. Instructors will evaluate Cadets’ essays using the enclosed rubric and select one essay to submit to the Brigade LNO NLT 12 February 2021. The brigade will evaluate and select the top 3 essays using the enclosed rubric and submit them to the JROTC Directorate. The JROTC Directorate will select the national winners.
3. Essay Guidance. The length of the essays will be 2-3 pages, excluding cover page. Pages within the essay, including cover page, must adhere to the following:
a. Essay Theme: “The Challenges of Online and In-Person Learning in a Pandemic
Environment”.
b. Layout:
(1) Font Type: Times New Roman
(2) Font size: 12.
(3) Spacing: Double.
(4) Margins: 1 inch on all sides.
c. Cover page will identify Cadet’s:

(3) LET number
