I am pleased to be writing you as the counselor of all 9thgraders and all 10th graders with last names P-Z!
This is my 4th year at Owen High School and I will be the first to tell you that we have a good thing going at Owen. Our administration, teachers, counselors, staff, classes, clubs and sports are all top notch. Feel free to contact me any time to discuss what we offer and how we excel.
Here is a little information about my background; I was born and raised in South Pittsburg, TN, and in 2005 I received my BS in English Secondary Education at Appalachian State University. Following graduation, I worked as an English teacher at Hanger Hall School, in Asheville. Then in 2013 I graduated from the University of San Francisco receiving my Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a focus in School Counseling. Previous to my studies in San Francisco, I lived in Hawaii, spent time in Europe, South East Asia and South America. Traveling is extremely important to me, as diversity and differing cultures add rich contextual meaning to my life. I hope to share these experiences in meaningful ways with all that I meet. I am so happy to be home in North Carolina, in these beautiful mountains and in this wonderful community.
As a counselor at Owen High School, I would like to reach out to you so we can team up to make our school a safe, warm and engaging learning environment where our students are taught to be individuals, great community members, and academically motivated students.
Throughout the school year I am available for one-on-one counseling with any student in need, whether the need is academic or personal. I will hold those conversations with extreme care and respect and within the guidelines of my duty for confidentiality. I will also be leading small groups throughout the year with 6-8 students at a time. Previously, students have requested small groups on positive body image, study skills and career exploration. Throughout the year, I will also be providing classroom guidance on transitioning to high school, planning for the future and a myriad of other topics.
Outside of working with students in these ways, I am the 504 coordinator, course recovery coordinator and the truancy coordinator. I also serve as faculty representative for Governor's school, the SAT, the Welcoming Committee, Junior Marshals and Leadership Challenge. Please contact me if you have any questions about anything regarding these subjects. Finally, and equally as important, I am here to support YOU! It really does take a village to raise a child (or 800 of them!) I am a firm believer that we are all in this together. My door is always open if you have some issue that you would like to discuss, good or bad. Sharing funny stories is as equally as important as sharing tough times, so swing on through any time!
